Learn to Ask the Right Kind of Questions to Uncover Needs
BEFORE You Tell Them All About Your Product.
Have you ever noticed while telling someone about your products or service how they have an disinterested stare? Does it sometimes seem like you are talking to a brick wall? Do you have a hard time captivating their attention?
Want to know a SECRET? Here it is… They seem disinterested because you haven’t identified the specific benefits that your product or service offers that will fill their specific needs.
So, before we get into the products, services, features, etc we must first go through a questioning phase to uncover their wants and their needs. This is one of the first things I teach my new team members because it can make or break your success. I’d like to provide a brief overview of the topic in this blog post.
There are several lines of questioning:
Questioning people about why they called or contacted you
Questions while talking with potential business builders
Questions to ask while talking with potential customers about your products.
We will focus on potential customers and in this post.
Features versus Benefits: Features are the details of the product:
When was it developed?
How does it work?
What are its ingredients?
The way we do the business.
Benefits involve showing them “What’s in it for them?” Benefits are all about how the product will improve their quality of life.
Benefit Words: Benefits are discussed with words that talk about “Results.” Here is a partial list:
This product will…
Increase (your circulation, etc.)
Improve (your energy level, etc)
Enhance (your memory, etc)
Eliminate your stress
Save time and money
Protect your health
Once you have identified a list of your product’s benefits you can design questions that will help you know which of the benefits they are most interested in knowing about. There are two types of questions: Closed questions and open questions.
Closed questions illicit people to give short answers… usually yes or no. You won’t gain much information from these kinds of questions. Here are some words that start off closed questions:
Are
Can
Will
Could
Should
Would
Open Questions start with:
Who (will be using this product?)
What (are some of your challenges and frustrations?)
When (are you the most fatigued during the day?)
Where (do you intend to use this product?)
Why (BEWARE: This word often causes people to become defensive because when you use it you are questioning a decision they have made. It often makes people feel uncomfortable.)
How (do you see yourself using this?)
ACTION STEPS: (Action steps are my way of getting new team members focused on how to immediately apply this training.)
• Make a list of your product’s benefits.
• Create an “open” question for each of the benefits.
• Then, use those open questions to determine which benefits the potential customer will be interested in.

Whether you are building a network marketing, MLM, direct sales or a conventional business it’s vital to understand who you are talking with and how they process information and make their decisions. When training my marketing team I strongly recommend that they learn and apply this powerful information if they are serious about building their business.
When you understand how others process information, communicate and make their decisions you can relate to them much better. It’s also important to understand your own personality style. When talking with a potential customer or potential business partner, of a different style, it will be important to speak their language. It is vital to know if they prefer a lot of information or just the overall big picture.
AUDITORY DIGITAL STYLE
part 2 of 4
How to recognize people who prefer the Auditory-Digital communication style? They generally gravitate to the sciences and occupations that deal with facts and figures or problem solving, such as accountants, engineers, scientists. They are excited by logic and reason and fear being illogical. They have a more formal and conservative look. They tend to have a structured and deliberate walking pattern. They demonstrate few, if any, facial expressions and few body jesters.
They keep a neat and organized office environment. You might see maps, flow charts or graphs within sight. When they write letters or emails they will generally be long and filled with lots of data to back up what they are presenting.
Their voice will be relatively monotone with few voice inflections. They speak at a slower rate and with less volume than the “Visuals” we discussed in the last blog post.
Strong Skills:

Follow through skills
Analysis
Very organized
Dependable
Great planners
Weaknesses:
Sometimes fall into “paralysis by over-analysis.”
Critical
Overly cautious
Hard to please because they are often perfectionists.
Tend to be more pessimistic and skeptical than other personality styles.
When presenting their business they may tend to go into much more detail than most want to know about. They love to discuss compensation plans and other details. They like to make sure they are covering all the bases.
Likes:
They like mysteries.
They like doing things one at a time… in sequence.
They love to make sense of complex concepts.
Acknowledgment and reinforcement.
They like to hear, “Thanks. I appreciate how you handled this.”
The enjoy time alone. Tend to be withdrawn and loners.
Agendas and timelines
Completing projects.
They like to analyze things and solve problems.
They like details and facts.
Being on time, being right, being accurate, and being precise.
They like to schedule things.
They like processes and systems.
They like order, structure, planning and preparing. (They hate chaos.)
They like predictability.
They like being right.
They love documentation (“Documentation always beats conversation.”)
They like to qualify what they say. They want to come across as logical and rational.
They like to study their genealogy reports.
Dislikes:
They dislike being wrong or embarrassed.
They dislike people who are not on time.
The dislike people who are loud.
They do not like being rushed or pushed.
They do not like interruptions.
They do not like skipping over steps. They like sequence.
The dislike disorganized and unprepared people.
They dislike spontaneity and surprises.
They do not like a lot of jokes when talking about business.

All the ducks are in a row (Order is very important to them.)
So, when you are talking to someone who prefers the Auditory-Digital style you would do well to have all your ducks in a row and be organized and prepared. Do not “play it by ear” with them. Do not be disorganized or informal. Cover points in a bulleted list format and do not miss any steps. Stay in sequence. Be thorough, logical and well-prepared. Shower them with details and information which they love to analyze. Give them time to process what you give them. Because they consider everything they seem slow at making decisions but when they do make a decision they usually stick with it.
Appeal to their need for documentation, logic and accuracy. Remember they like documentation more than conversation. Go easy with testimonials… unless they are from highly-respected individuals.
Gear any compliments toward their efficiency and effectiveness in working with processes and procedures.
You will need to ask questions, questions and questions to draw out their needs.
When you write or send an email to them be specific, prepared and precise. Offer them plenty of references for further research.
When talking with them on the phone always be prepared, precise and task oriented. Stick to the plan. Go straight to business instead of talking about relationships, family, etc. Discuss the pros and the cons. When getting them started with you have a detailed plan ready for them… backed up with documentation. Direct them to the company tools so they can get all the information they need.
They will make their business decisions based more on logic than emotions.

Whether you are building a network marketing, MLM, direct sales or a conventional business it’s vital to understand who you are talking with and how they process information and make their decisions. When training my marketing team I strongly recommend that they learn and apply this powerful information if they are serious about building their business.
So, when speaking with a potential client, customer or partner you may wonder how to approach them.Here are some possible ways:
Talk fast, get to the point quickly and stay on task. Do not talk about family or personal things… just the facts. Tell them how they can make or save money and how they can earn recognition in doing it. Be blunt and to the point. Do not waste their time with “small talk.”
Talk a little slower. Shower then with facts and figures and details for them to analyze. Give them time to answer questions and to process the information. Ask them to tell you what other information would be helpful. Expect that they will take their time to make a decision but when they do they will usually stick with it. Do not talk too much about families or relationships… just the details.
Have fun. Show more excitement in your voice. Talk about how joining you will be an exciting and fun adventure. Talk about family and relationships. Give them the overall picture and not a lot of details. Allow them to talk and ramble on a bit. Acknowledge their many ideas.
Talk a lot slower with them. Talk about “connecting” and family and relationships. Discuss how your opportunity or product will allow them to be nurturing and supportive to a lot of people. Be warm and friendly as you relate with them.
As you noticed,there are four distinctively different groups of people. Can you see that if you talk the same with everyone some will connect and some won’t. Some will see the big picture while others will not. Some will like the sound of what you are saying while others will feel good about it. What you are presenting will make sense to some and not to others. We simply CAN NOT talk the same to everyone if we want them to respond favorably to what we are saying.
The four styles have been likened to animals or colors. I like the following was of distinguishing the styles:
Visual
Auditory-Digital
Auditory
Kinesthetic
It’s important to understand the characteristics of the different styles. When we know which style a person uses we can learn to adapt by using their preferred style. By doing so you build rapport more quickly because people like and trust those who are are like them. You will have to become good at using your minor (less preferred) styles when needed.

The VISUAL Style

How to recognize people who prefer the VISUAL communication style? They generally dresssharper than others. They dress for success. They often occupy leadership positions because they are natural leaders.You may find them as a CEO, entrepreneur or in another position of power or authority.
They Like:

competition (The love competition and a challenge.)
to negotiate (Love to argue and win.)
to be task oriented
awards, trophies, diplomas and recognition

So, when you are talking to someone who prefers the visual style you would do well to avoid small talk and get the point quickly and stick to it. Do not beat around the bush. Do not shower then with details but instead give them the big picture. Do not waste their time and by all means be on time if you are calling them or meeting with them.

In Your Business and in Your Life
Many think that SUCCESS is a mental thing. And, as a Certified Law of Attraction Trainer, I agree that much of it IS mental. However, as a physical therapist, I realize that there is something that surpasses all the mental effort, affirmations and deliberate attraction we can muster up. And it has to do with our physical bodies. Specifically it has to do with our acid/alkaline balance. Many people will say, “So, what is that?”
Acidity and alkalinity are at opposite ends of the pH scale. Everything we eat or drink makes our bodies more acidic or more alkaline. Dr. Susan Lark, M.D. in her book The Chemistry of Successstates “The ability to maintain acid / alkaline balance has an amazing effect on six of the eight peak-performance traits:
physical vitality and stamina
mental clarity and acuity
ability to get along with other people
optimism and vision
speedy recovery from illness, injury and exertion
and resistance to illness”
She goes on to say that “performing at your best is related to your body’s ability to maintain a healthy, slightly alkaline state.”
Dr. Theodore A. Baroody states in his book, Alkalize or Die,“The world is facing the largest health crisis in recorded history.”He continues to say, “The countless names attached to illnesses do not really matter. What does matter is that they all come form the same root cause… too much tissue acid in the body!” In his best-selling book he summarizes beginning, intermediate and advanced symptoms of being too acidic. He calls this the “Acid Symptom Checklist.” Here are some excerpts:
agitation
muscle and joint pains
low energy
panic attacks
menstrual cramping
heartburn
rapid or irregular heartbeat
hard to get up in the morning
cold sores (Herpes)
depression
loss of memory or concentration
migraine headaches
insomnia
impotence
gastritis
colitis
and the list goes on to more advanced symptoms.

Dr. Arthur Clifton Guyton, author or Textbook of Medical Physiology states, “The first step to maintaining health is to alkalize the body. The cells of a healthy body are alkaline while the cells of a diseased body are acidic.”
My experience has suggested to me three ways to influence this vitally important acid/alkaline balance. They include:
Limit the amount of acid-producing food and liquids. Meats, dairy products, sugars and especially sodas produce excessive acid.
Increase intake of fresh fruits and vegetables because they tilt the balance in the alkaline direction
Drink alkaline water. Most people are not aware that most tap water and bottled water products are highly acidic. Therefore they tilt our balance in the direction of acidity. Some have said “If you can simply change your water… you can change your life.”
My doctor recommended a book by Dr. Joel Fuhrman, M.D. titled, Eat for Health. Dr. Fuhrman explains that “The more high-nutrient food you consume, the less low-nutrient food you desire.” His diet is based on cutting back on meat, dairy and sugars and focusing on fresh fruits and vegetables.
Many people have followed his dietary suggestions and have made the radical adjustment, in the way they eat, and have found significantly greater degrees of health. Yet many others have found it difficult to make such a radical change in their diets.
I have personally found that by make smaller changes in my intake of acid-producing foods and drinking alkaline water has been a good combination for me. It has increased my focus, stamina, energy and has allowed me to totally eliminate the two Aleves with 3-4 Ibuprofen I was taking, twice a day, to ease my post-op shoulder pain (rotator cuff repair.)
In summary, the acid / alkaline balance is a vital issue that greatly influences our success in life and in business. It has a major impact on your current state of health. You owe it to yourself to fully investigate it.

I just heard a story about a man, somewhere in Russia, who was trying to escape across enemy lines. He jumped into a closed train car… a box car. They locked all the train car doors as they left the station.
As the train left the station he sensed that it was going in exactly the opposite direction he thought it was and it was headed straight toward frigid Siberia.
He didn’t know what to do. He tried to make noises and get someone’s attention but failed. He had to just make do with his situation It grew colder and colder and colder. He wasn’t dressed for it. There was nothing in the box car to keep him warm..
He found some way of writing on the wall and he wrote a diary about his experiences. He wrote how he was getting numb in his fingers… how his fingers were getting very cold and frost-bitten. He wrote about how he had difficulty keeping his eyes open.
And on about the forth day the train reached its destination. They opened the door and found the man lying on the floor. He had all the signs of being frozen to death. His fingertips were black and had all the signs of frost bite. The man literally froze to death.
But the interesting thing was….. He was wrong in his directions. The train had NOT gone into Siberia. It had never gone into a temperature below 40 degrees. But that man’s mind perceived that he was freezing to death and he did exactly what his mind perceived.
Our perception is our reality.

“WHAT IF I DON’T ACCEPT THE LAW OF ATTRACTION?”
Do you believe in the Law of Gravity? It really doesn’t matter whether you do or do not believe in it because it exists. And I think you will agree that it strongly influences our lives… In the same way, the Law of Attraction operates in our lives whether we believe it or not.
“WHY SHOULD I BE CONCERNED ABOUT THE LAW OF ATTRACTION?”
Let me ask you this… Do you care about gravity? You should. Although you don’t have to know all the scientific workings of gravity a simple working knowledge of it can save your life. For example, how silly would it be for a guy to step off the edge of a tall building shouting, “I don’t BELIEVE in gravity?” A little knowledge of the Law of Gravity is vital to your success in life. In the same way, a little knowledge of the Law of Attraction can propel you forward in your life and in your business.

So, since the Law of Attraction is at work in our lives… attracting good things and bad things, wanted things and unwanted things RANDOMLY wouldn’t it make sense to learn how to use it to our benefit by learning how to attract what we want instead of what we don’t want? Can you see how it could change your life? It sounds like it could pave the way to a more satisfying life.
“SO, TELL ME ABOUT THE LAW OF ATTRACTION … IN A NUTSHELL?”
So you say, “Okay, I’ll accept that the Law of Attraction does exist and that it’s important for me to know about. Tell me a little bit more about it.”
The Law of Attraction is a law because it works like gravity. Even though we can’t actually see gravity we can see evidence of it. For example, when a glass slips out of your hand gravity pulls it to the floor and it shatters. If you would imagine gravity as a huge magnet, in the center of the earth, you can see how everything and everyone is attracted to it– to the surface of the earth. That’s right. Gravity is like a magnet that attracts everything to it.
In the same way, the words we think or say produce thoughts. And like gravity attracts objects to itself our dominant thoughts (and the feelings associated with them) attract other thoughts and even situations to us. That’s why it’s called the Law of ATTRACTION because we literally attract the things we mentally focus on.
In the same way that we can see evidence of the Law of Gravity we can also see evidence of the Law of Attraction in our lives. For example:
These are examples of how our thoughts (and intentions) ATTRACT people, circumstances and situations to us. This is evidence of Law of Attraction in our lives.

That’s why it’s vital to dwell on only positive and productive thoughts whenever possible.

Now that we understand that our dominant thoughts ATTRACT you can see their influence can bring into our lives situations that feel good to us or those that do not sound good to us. Living in the Eye of the Storm an Introduction to the Law of Attraction

Life is much like a tropical storm or a hurricane. We can either live in the chaos and turmoil of the storm or we can live in the eye of the storm.

Turmoil, chaos, turbulence
Undesirable relationships, jobs and businesses

Have you ever said, “Why doesn’t the Law of Attraction Work for me?” I have.
You may have heard that what we attract into our lives is all about our dominant thoughts. What we give attention and focus to we attract… like a magnet… whether it be wanted or unwanted, good or bad. In my free Introductory TeleClasses I teach that there is a simple 3-step process that allows us to attract more of what we want and less of what we don’t want. Yet sometimes it seems like there is an invisible force that blocks my desires from coming to me. Allow me to tell a story that will help to clear this up.. so that it will make more sense.
When I was an early teenage boy, in Florida, Hurricane Donna passed over Fort Myers– where we lived. I vividly remember the horizontal rain and the howling 160 mile-per-hour winds. We were literally surrounded by turmoil.
Then, suddenly, the wind subsided, the rain stopped, the sky became blue and it became utterly silent and calm outside. My older and younger brothers and I went outside and were amazed. It was sunny and clear. It felt warm like a Summer day. There were no clouds, wind or rain. We were in the eye of the storm. It was glorious. We got on our bikes and rode around the neighborhood for about 45 minutes looking at the devastation the wind produced. Then gradually dark clouds reappeared on the horizon. The storm gradually returned and all the wind and turmoil ramped up again.
What has been discovered is that our emotions can cause turmoil in our lives. Emotions like anger, bitterness and unforgiveness cause turmoil that actually blocks our ability to attract what we want in life.

A Key to Your Success
When working with people I like to modify Einstein’s quote by saying:
“After you get through this, I’ll accept one percent of the credit for inspiration and you get 99 percent of the credit for the perspiration.”
Yesterday, a lady shared with me. “Tom, I literally owe you my life. If it weren’t for your help, encouragement and guidance I don’t think I’d be alive right now.”
My response to her was, “I couldn’t have done it without you.”
Each of you is the star. You are the one at the driver’s seat. Oh, you may benefit from a mentor, a guide or people who can encourage you but when it is all said and done you can look in the mirror and thank the person looking back at you because YOU are the one who ultimately made it happen… the one who persevered and made it through.
