Be Healthy, Wealthy and Wise: And Don’t Lose Any Sleep Over It!

So you want to be Healthy, Wealthy and Wise? These three must go together in a well-balanced manner in order to ensure success in life.

WISE: You must make wise choices to become healthy. I am sure you will agree that without your health, any wealth you accumulate will be next to useless.

WEALTHY: There are numerous methods used to generate wealth on and off the Internet. I personally believe that a combination of network marketing mixed with a way to monetize your business while you are waiting for the primary business income to start coming in is a great way to go. Again, you must be wise and exercise wisdom in deciding which company to be associated with. In a recent post I discussed that it is important to seek a person/leader rather than a program, product or company but a leader. If you missed that post, please visit it here… “What people Really Want.”

With this in mind I am going to introduce a NEW CATEGORY to my blog. It will involve ‘Health and Wellness” which is an important component to eventually enjoying your wealth. And… here is my first post.

INSOMNIA: Don’t Lose Any Sleep Over Your Business

You know how your mind can run so fast when you get to bed that it becomes difficult to sleep? That’s the way I was. I started taking one of those major brands of Pain-Reliever/Sleep Aid. You know, the XYZ-PM brand?

I discovered that I slept better but something else that has bothered me got much worse. I have suffered from heart palpitations and PVCs premature ventricular contractions for many years. I found that they became much worse when I took the over-the-counter “sleep aides” So I Googled some of those name brand products and found that the sleep aid ingredient was a antihistamine called Diphenhydramine which is also marketed as Benadryl. Now, don’t get me wrong because this is a life-saving medication in certain medical conditions.

One of the main side effect of using antihistamines is severe fatigue and sleepiness. Therefore it obviously shouldn’t be taken during the day while driving or operating machinery. Isn’t it interesting that an entire industry and product —sleep aids can be built one of the side effects of the antihistamine?

Well, I guess it would be okay if there were not several other side effects also associated with it. And perhaps the other adverse reactions do not bother most people. But, they bothered me to the point where I checked it out. I encourage you to do the same.

I found more natural solution that ended the Insomnia once and for all. It’s a naturally occurring hormone manufactured in our bodies– called Melatonin.

What is Melatonin?

BE CAREFUL! Melatonin production requires Darkness while gait stability requires light.

Melatonin is manufactured in the pineal gland (a small gland in the center of our forehead.) The production is inhibited by light and stimulated by darkness. Because of this it is important to keep the lights dim while sleeping.

The production of melatonin is said to decrease with age. As a physical therapist I teach that our balance reactions also decrease with age. I often recommend that people have a night light lit to provide more visual feedback while walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night. When a person stands on one leg– then closes their eyes they see how important visual feedback is to your standing balance. Therefore, the need for darkness (for melatonin production) and the need for light for gait stability and balance can be accomplished by sleeping in a dark room with an easily accessible light that can be turned on when you get out of bed in the middle of the night.

Melatonin also has a benefit of being an antioxidant– thus providing other health benefits. I am sure that there are a lot of companies producing it. I use the USANA brand.

Talk with your doctor

It is always a good idea to keep in touch with your attending physician when it comes to medications. They might prescribe a medication where the side effects are much less severe than the condition they are treating.
Ask your doctor about  sleep aids and if he or she thinks Melatonin would be beneficial to you.

Never play doctor.
